Abstract

Rachmaninoff’s Three Russian Songs are musically and vocally accessible for performance by all levels of choirs, but no edition exists that provides English speakers a transliteration of the Russian text from Cyrillic. Arranged by Rachmaninoff for altos and basses accompanied by large orchestra, the simplicity and moderate range of the vocal parts, and the piano reduction composed by Rachmaninoff himself make this work ideal for student and amateur choirs. This dissertation aims to facilitate performance of the work for ensembles by providing information for choral conductors who intend to prepare the work for performance. Included are a discussion of the work’s history, analysis of the music, an edition of the score with piano reduction of the orchestral accompaniment, transliteration of the text underlaid in the score, and a guide to the diction of the Russian text.
