From the earliest days of my career in orthopaedic surgery and chemical engineering, I have been fascinated with the prospect of regrowing bone and connective tissue to help patients regain mobility. It is now my privilege to be leading teams of scientists not only in my own lab but throughout the UConn Health Center who are pursuing promising research in this area. This includes Dr. David Rowe who has devoted most of his career to the study of osteogenesis imperfecta and is now pioneering new approaches for bone and tissue regeneration through the use of adult and embryonic stem cells. These efforts have received robust extramural support and have fostered collaborative efforts with scientific colleagues throughout the University of Connecticut – the top public university in New England. Like you, I am confident that teams on campuses across the country will continue to make breakthroughs to improve care for generations to come. I hope you will enjoy learning more

In the mid-90’s, the UConn School of Medicine made several innovative changes to its curriculum that emphasized the development of clinical skills and problem-based learning. One of the hallmarks of the curriculum is the Student Continuity Practice, a program that places students as early as the first month of their first year, in community-based primary care offices. For the next three years, students spend time in that office, observing and learning the nuances and art of primary care medicine.

This is part of UConn’s overall strategy to prepare graduates for all facets of medicine, including primary care. Through the years, the program has given students invaluable insights into medicine and a unique opportunity to get to know patients and their families. It has proven to be a success for students and preceptors alike.

We have now gone through a complete generation – with UConn School of Medicine graduates mentoring students in their offices! I hope you enjoy reading about this success story as well as the exciting news about some of our research endeavors and recent Challenge Grant awards.

Welcome to the first issue of our new publication. Designed to be a quick and easy read, our goal is to convey the energy and passion found throughout the dynamic University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

I became the seventh dean of the UConn School of Medicine and vice president for Health Affairs at the UConn Health Center just a year ago. I joined the UConn community from the University of Virginia, where I served as the Lillian T. Pratt Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Since my arrival, I have been continually impressed with the quality and intellectual vigor of our medical school faculty, students and alumni.

Three times a year, these pages will highlight just some of the extraordinary accomplishments and talents of these people. We will share their stories and describe the impact they are having both here in Connecticut and well beyond.

The University of Connecticut School of Medicine is the only public medical school in the state and one of only three public medical schools in the New England. Consequently, it plays a pivotal role in education, research, and healthcare delivery in both the state and the region. The primary mission of the School of Medicine is education at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels for practitioners, teachers, and researchers, conducted in an environment of exemplary patient care, research, and public service.
